| $@%&! level: Low “Bedroom” level: Medium Violence level: Medium (loads of people die, but it's in the equivalent of a nuclear strike, so it's not exactly gory) Back Cover: “It is a tale of revolution, of the rebellion of the former Lunar penal colony against the Lunar Authority that controls it from Earth. It is the tale of the disparate people—a computer technician, a vigorous young female agitator, and an elderly academic—who become the revel movement's leaders. And it is the story of Mike, the supercomputer whose sentience is known only to this inner circle, and who for reasons of his own is committed to the revolution's ultimate success.” |
As is often the case with these things, the computer is actually my favorite character. He/she/it is just so very innocent in the ways of social interaction, while at the same time being really clever when it comes to pretty much everything else. It's sort of like Spock, I guess, or possibly Data if you're more of a Next Generation fan, with all of the same ability to be really lovable. Also, the revolution would have been pretty much impossible to pull off (at least as easily as they did) if they hadn't had a sentient computer on their side. So let that be a lesson to you. If you ever run into a computer that can talk to you, treat it with respect and it might just turn into your best friend.
Oh, and if you have problems with fictional representations of alternative families, you might want to be careful with this one. They live in a society that accepts just about anything that happens between consenting adults, and the main character is in a sort of group marriage. I guess while you're writing thought experiments about the perfect rebellion, you might as well explore a few lifestyle choices as well.
